The First Time is Always the Scariest: Zip Lining, Repelling and Real Estate Investing

Today I did two things for the first time:

  • I repelled down the side of a cliff (60 feet straight down)
  • I went zip-lining 800 meters over the tree tops of the jungle on the Argentina/Brazil border, over 60 feet off the ground.

The lead up to both was scary and outside of my comfort zone.

A number of other people in the group went first and, even though I didn’t know any of them, watching them successfully complete the activities provided some reassurance. But, it was still scary!

Fear barrier = conquered.

A number of other people in the group went first and, even though I didn’t know any of them, watching them successfully complete the activities provided some reassurance. But, it was still scary!

When my turn came, I knew I had to be intentional about pushing through my fear, because I knew the rewards would be great.

The guide gave everyone the option to back out at the last minute….but I knew that if I backed out due to fear and passed up this opportunity, I would regret it forever. The opportunity before me was unbelievable.

In both activities, when I pushed off, the feeling of absolute exhilaration was incredible……and it was not just zipping through treetops or seeing the gorgeous waterfalls in the rainforest while repelling down a cliff…it was the realization that AS I was doing these things, I was actively overcoming a fear. And as soon as I completed each activity and had my feet on the ground, I felt an incredible rush of accomplishment and a feeling of “that was awesome, I want to do it again!”

And I would now, without question, do both activities again with very little apprehension….and, as a result, enjoy them even more the next time.

The first time is the scariest, always. And once you push past a fear barrier for the first time, the second and third times become much less scary. But if you allow fear to hold you back so that you cannot even try it once, you miss out on some of the most amazing things in life…..that you may regret forever.

Zip Lining, Repelling and Real Estate Investing

Overcoming the fear I felt in the rainforest today reminded me of two other points in my life when I felt a similar type of fear that produced the same exhilaration when I made the move to conquer it….and those two moments changed my life forever:

  • When I bought my first investment property in 2004
  • When I quit my job to start my own real estate investment company in 2007

I remember the same fear in the lead up to each. I literally to this day remember how scary it was at the moment I was signing those first set of loan documents. But if I had let the fear hold me back, I would still be a W2 wage-earner to this day and I would have spent this past summer in an office working 9 to 5 (or more hours) on somebody else’s schedule with a supervisor looking over me.

Instead, I have spent it in Buenos Aires drinking Malbec and learning to dance Tango with “vacations” to go zip-lining through the rain forest in northern Argentina. I have been able to create passive income and structure remote work locations so that I can travel the world and run my business from anywhere.

Investment real estate is an extremely powerful and liberating vehicle for lifestyle design.

Conclusion

If you are just getting into the game, remember that not everything will go perfectly (certainly, I have had many challenges both with my investment properties and my real estate business over the years), but even with mistakes and mishaps factored in, the net rewards can change your life forever.
